Ways to Give

Make a Gift

Our work is possible because of generous donors and partners like you. We can never overstate the ripple effect that one donation can have on the lives of our clients. Whether you give $1 or $10,000, the strength of our circle lies in all who are a part of it. Support at every level makes us feel proud to have you in our community and fortunate to have a generous circle of friends with a shared vision — a society where all of our neighbors have the resources they need to thrive.

We value our donors and take seriously the responsibility to use donations in the best way possible to achieve impact — supporting our neighbors to attain financial self-sufficiency and a pathway out of poverty.

Donations can be made online, or by sending a check to:

A Wider Circle
6841 Elm Street #6133
McLean, VA 22106

Checks should be made out to “A Wider Circle”

You will be redirected to our secure online processing system through Network for Good.

Stock Donations

Donating appreciated stock allows you to receive a tax deduction and presents a more efficient way of contributing compared with selling stock and then making an after-tax cash donation. Donating appreciated stock allows A Wider Circle to utilize the full proceeds of the gift to help families on their path out of poverty.

Please note that, in order to receive acknowledgment for your stock donation, you must inform us of the stock name and number of shares, as well as provide your contact information so we may generate a receipt.

Please send contact and stock information to development@awidercircle.org.

Stock transfer information

Broker: Charles Schwab & Co., Inc.
DTC: 0164
Account number: 4931-1732
Registration: A WIDER CIRCLE

Per IRS requirements, you will receive an acknowledgment of your stock donation with the name and number of shares. You can learn more about the IRS guidelines on reporting here.

IRA Donations

Qualified charitable distributions from an IRA are also a great strategy to consider for our supporters who are subject to required minimum distributions from their IRA account. If you have an IRA and are at least age 72, you can take a qualified charitable distribution from your IRA. Instead of receiving your mandatory taxable distribution, the funds go directly to charity, and the distribution is not included in your taxable income. We recommend consulting your financial advisor or brokerage firm in order to process the qualified charitable distribution.

If your broker sends gifts bank to bank through the Automated Clearing House (ACH) please contact Amy Javaid at  amy@awidercircle.org to receive bank details.

If your advisor or broker mails a check to you as the account owner, the check should be made payable to A Wider Circle and can be mailed to our mailing address for financial donations: 6841 Elm Street #6133 McLean, VA 22106. However, if you are mailing a letter, supporting documents or a special request, please mail to our regular mailing address: 10325 Kensington Parkway, #70, Kensington, MD 20895

Please check the address on file with your financial institution: mail sent to a Moorland Road address will not be forwarded, and we do not receive mail at the offices on Brookville Road.

Donor Advised Funds

A donor advised fund (DAF) is a charitable giving program that allows you to combine the most favorable tax benefits with the flexibility to support your favorite causes.

If you have a donor advised fund, DAF Direct enables you to recommend grants to this nonprofit directly from your DAF (as long as your DAF’s sponsoring organization is participating).

Planned Giving

Adding A Wider Circle to your estate plans is a great way to build a legacy that supports your neighbors for generations to come.

One simple way to do this is by making a gift to A Wider Circle in your will. FreeWill is a secure online resource you can use to make or update your will in just 20 minutes for free.

Do you have an IRA, 401(k), life insurance policy, or any other non-probate assets not included in your will?
You can also use  FreeWill to name A Wider Circle as the beneficiary of one or more of your non-probate assets and organize these assets in one place so you can easily plan your beneficiary designations.

When you decide to make a planned gift to A Wider Circle, you are both preserving and furthering A Wider Circle’s mission for generations to come. Your contribution expands opportunities, enlarges our footprint, and ensures your legacy is stewarded.

For more information, please email Amy Javaid at amy@awidercircle.org.

Workplace Giving

Many employers across the country have workplace giving programs that allow their employees to donate pre-tax income from their paychecks to nonprofits like A Wider Circle. Some will even match these donations!

For employees of the federal government, you can support A Wider Circle through the Combined Federal Campaign (CFC). If you are eligible to participate in the CFC, we hope you’ll consider designating A Wider Circle (CFC #21120) during this year’s campaign (Oct. 1 – Dec. 31).

Not a federal employee? Ask your employer if they offer a workplace giving program — it’s a simple, impactful way to support A Wider Circle all year long. To sign up, you may need the information below:

Volunteer

Join our more than 3,000 volunteers who contribute their time and talent to help us help our neighbors.

At A Wider Circle, we serve our neighbors in the DC metro area by facilitating the exchange of goods, skills, and connections from neighbor to neighbor. We could not do what we do without the help of our many volunteers. As a volunteer at A Wider Circle, you are one of our most valuable neighbors!

A Wider Circle is an open and welcoming environment for everyone. We welcome volunteers who are looking for both episodic and long-term volunteer opportunities. We offer volunteer opportunities in our warehouse, showrooms, and administrative offices. We also offer opportunities to deliver items to our neighbors in need.

To learn more about volunteering at A Wider Circle, please watch our Volunteer Orientation video.

Episodic Volunteer Opportunities

Episodic volunteering is perfect for individuals who want to contribute to their community but have busy or inconsistent schedules.

Supporting our Essential Support program, which focuses on providing basic need items for the home to our neighbors seeking to rise out of poverty, is where our neighbors can make the biggest impact. Donations we receive include furniture, housewares, linens, toys, and baby and professional clothing, and volunteers help us sort these donations and stock the showroom where our clients select their items. With the help of volunteers like you, A Wider Circle is able to furnish 10-15 homes free of charge each day for our neighbors experiencing furniture poverty.

As a volunteer, you will be working in our Center for Community Service located at 9159 Brookville Road in Silver Spring, MD 20910. Volunteer shifts are available Tuesday through Saturday at 10:00, 1:00, and 3:00. Each shift is approximately two hours.

All volunteers are required to register as a volunteer using our online portal. Registration includes signing a liability waiver. Youth under 18 years of age require a guardian to cosign the online liability waiver in advance.

Volunteers between the ages of 7-13 are welcome as long as they are accompanied by an adult during their volunteer service.

Long-Term Volunteer Opportunities

Long-term volunteer opportunities are a great way for volunteers to continue using existing skills, learn new skills, and meet new people. Once you have registered and volunteered in our warehouse, you can contact a Volunteer Coordinator to discuss any of the following long-term opportunities.
