By Jen Tidwell, AWC Volunteer

I was thrilled Carol agreed to be my very first Styled by Jen client. Carol is a community leader at our Ward 8 Hub, regularly volunteering on behalf of her neighbors, including by serving as President of the Highland Dwellings Resident Council. I’ve known Carol for over 3 years, and I appreciate her sense of humor, devotion to the community and engaging, fun personality. She’s delightful to collaborate with and so deserving of clothing to enhance her vibrant personality.

Style Goals

Carol wanted to dress to impress not just for herself, but because she’s a leader in her community. She told me, “I want my clothes to say I’m bold, beautiful, and confident. I want people to see my style and think, I want to work with her.” That’s what style can do — it can speak before we say a word.

She added, “I have meetings with DCHA (DC Housing Authority), and like looking professional for those meetings. I like looking nice and being casual because I’m meeting people all the time. I prefer bright colors in the summer and dark colors in the winter.”

Common Challenges, Practical Solutions

During our session, Carol shared “My main issues are affording casual clothing, getting clothing that fits properly, finding colors that flatter my skin tone, and finding appropriate clothing for events I need to attend.”

What Brings You Joy?

This is one of my favorite questions to ask: What makes you smile when you get dressed? I want every person I work with to leave a styling session feeling excited about what they’re wearing.

Carol’s response? “I want people to see me looking good, and I can tell them ‘I’m Styled by Jen, who can be reached at A Wider Circle!’ I want to encourage others that you can look great and stylish  as a plus size woman or any size!”

Style in Action

I found Carol stylish but comfortable flat shoes that coordinated with the stunning red dress. Her favorite color is red which is both flattering and eye catching.

This brings to my first Gem by Jen:

When thinking about getting dressed and looking and feeling your best, think about your power color — the one that makes you feel the most powerful and confident!

We added a few accessories including earrings, a layered necklace and a gorgeous printed headband. Carol posed for many pictures and her infectious smile made all of us happy. I can’t wait to style Carol for her next event!
