Val earned the nickname “Super Intern” at the Ward 8 Hub, not only because of her super-sized internship, but also because she’s such a superstar! A typical internship lasts two to three months during a summer or semester, so having Val on our team since February has been such a gift. She earned her bachelor’s degree in Clinical Psychology and Criminology from George Mason University and is currently taking classes at Penn State to become certified in Positive Psychology.

Stepping Out of Her Style Comfort Zone

I can’t think of any better area of expertise for Val than Positive Psychology because that’s exactly what she embodies every day. Whether interacting with the community through art therapy, individual counseling, research projects, or presentations, Val’s joyous disposition is always on display.

When we talked about her Styled by Jen experience, Val shared that she wanted a more polished and professional look—something elevated and feminine compared to her everyday casual style. I selected a few pieces for her, but didn’t get the chance to meet in person to explain my choices or confirm she felt good about them. At home, she tried on the items and was initially puzzled by a black-and-white printed dress with an asymmetrical hem. Despite her hesitation, she slipped it on, gave a spin, and realized the dress was flattering, unique, pretty — and perfectly Val!

The Magic of Trying It On

That moment leads to this month’s Gem by Jen:

Always try something on, even if it doesn’t catch your eye on the hanger. A dress on a hanger only gives a flat, two-dimensional view, but on the body, you see movement, drape, and shape. In other words, keep an open mind — you might discover a new favorite once you see yourself in it!

The Finishing Touch: Confidence and Flair

I’m so grateful for Val’s trust and open-mindedness as we collaborated on her style journey. With the finishing touch of statement earrings and textured heels, our “Super Intern” now has a look that’s more polished and confident, yet still completely her superstar self.
