Browns’ Beds – now at $300,000!
In 2014, A Wider Circle served more than 25,000 children and adults – and received more than 12,000 requests for beds. Requests come from individuals and families transitioning out of homeless shelters, escaping domestic violence, or simply living in poverty.
In response to this critical need, Donald and Ann Brown made an initial donation of $100,000 to A Wider Circle to start Browns’ Beds, a targeted effort to ensure that every individual seeking basic needs assistance from the organization receives a bed of his or her own in which to sleep. You can read more about their pledge in this recent article in The Washington Post.
The Browns have long been forces for change in the greater Washington, DC community. Mr. Brown, a real estate attorney and real estate entrepreneur, was a founder of both the law firm of Brown, Gildenhorn & Jacobs and the JBG Real Estate Companies and taught at the Harvard Business School for twelve years. Mrs. Brown is a highly regarded consumer advocate who has previously served as the Chairman of the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.
Mr. and Mrs. Brown’s intent with Browns’ Beds is to focus on the single most-requested item by those served by the organization. Already, the Browns’ generous donation has inspired others to increase the total gift; we now have received more than $100,000 in additional pledges for the campaign.
After the Browns’ first $100,000 was matched, they made another major announcement to donate an additional $100,000. This means a total of $300,000 for the purchase of beds!
