A Wider Circle turns 14 years old today. Thank you all for the support and encouragement over the years. We are truly building a movement here. When I walked out of my little apartment this morning, I remembered the six years of working there with teams of interns and staff members. I looked back as I walked out the door and knew that the real work was ahead.
We are making progress, and we are doing so because so many of you are engaging. That is the only way forward: together.
The solutions require us all to commit. I promise you, if your children or your parents were living in the conditions that we see each day on our visits or at our off-site projects – if you heard the mothers and fathers describe the conditions in which they are raising their children – you would give all you’ve got to change things, right away.
After 14 years, I can say emphatically that this is an everyone problem and an everyone solution.
You can help us celebrate our birthday next Wednesday, October 7, at The Community Ball! The name of the event reflects the fact that the entire community will be there. Many of those we serve will be joined by corporate leaders and employees of companies that have generously sponsored the event. Our staff and many of our volunteers will be there, and Senators Cory Booker and Tim Scott will help raise the bar in our efforts. We will all celebrate the effort and go away knowing how important it is to our humanity – to each of us – to end this crisis.
I have heard the doubts about ending poverty or truly making a difference here since day one. Yet I have seen the community come together and build this organization into the most dynamic, aggressive, thoughtful, and loving effort of which I have ever been a part.
To all who have helped or are about to help – and on behalf of those we are here to serve – thank you.
